Christine Gallagher studied Art Foundation at West Cheshire College of Further Education but then left student life behind to earn some much needed cash. She undertook a variety of different jobs in Chester before moving to London in 1993 to work at Tate Britain and shortly after, for the Science Museum's Education department. However, she has continued to create paintings and drawings throughout her working life and in her spare time, undertook various summer school courses at Chelsea School of Art and Wimbledon College of Art. Nowadays, she runs courses and workshops for post-16 students and adults who would like to learn new skills in the practice of creating art whilst also continuing her own practice.
The work she produces commercially is testament to her devotion to the subject and she is sometimes lucky enough to be commissioned to undertake portrait work from those who have seen her work locally, as well as from family and friends.
Her work is mainly centred on portraiture, much of it undertaken in fine detailed works where she aims always to encompass something of a persons character in the finished work in addition to portraying an accurate likeness.
Christine says: "I am totally devoted to the craft of painting and drawing and tend to paint or draw anything that interests me which usually involves the figure in one form or another. However, I also try to promote a sense of curiosity in my work, prompting the viewer to enquire into the story of a painting or at least engage thier interest enough so that they begin to form their own ideas about what I am trying to communicate".
